Can someone expain why the band didn't play last night? I thought they would have been at the volleyball game on Thursday night also. Someone said they have to have a sponser to play? What ever happened to school spirit and supporting the teams?

Good question. I thought they benefit from the concession stand sales too.

The band was at a honors program at Winona State University all day yesterday. Not sure if they came back last night or today.

Velocity, I'm curious as to what life experiences or education you have to support your opinion of Eden Prairie's turf? No doudt its the best....it's Eden Prairie.

I wonder if anyone has ever been taped to a goalpost @ Eden Prairie's field? grin

Cracker:
I was at EP about a week ago.
In the past few years I've been to and on the fields at Wayzata, Edina, Cooper, Hopkins, EP and SJU and all of them have turf. I just liked their surface. It seemed really fast but still had the "feel" of real grass. The fact that EP put up 56 on Hopkins didn't hurt. It could have been worse...they could have scored 80. Just be happy that LSH is playing GSL at EP on Friday and not EP. They are frickin' good!

Don't you know that these days taping a kid to a goal post would get you suspended or expelled from school and probably get you an assault charge. grin
We did have a streaker at Hopkins for homecoming. The cops were smart and didn't try to chase him down. The kid ran around for a little bit and then dropped to his knees at the 50, put his hands behind his head and waited for the cops. They took their time and made him wait it out buck naked in front of the crowd. When they finally reached him the kid asked what took them so long? The cops responded that it was his show and they weren't in a hurry!

I'd like to respond to the inquiries about why the band wasn't at the volleyball and football games this past week.
First, let me clarify that the pep band is not a district funded activity. It was cut from the budget about 10 years ago. For the first five years following that, I volunteered my time to have the band at sports events. For the 5 years since then we have had sponsorship from local businesses, families and organiations to pay the costs for music and the director stipend. While I have as much school spirit and pride in our students as the next person, I do feel I deserve to be paid for the work I do.
Second, please realize that band students are involved in many activities. Many of them are in the cast and orchestra (and I am a director) for the upcoming fall musical, for which we had rehearsal Thursday night, making us unavailable for the volleyball game. Friday and Saturday a group of junior and senior band members were accepted into the Winona State Honor Band Festival. an opportunity that is highly sought after by band members. We returned from that event at midnight Saturday night.
I appreciate that the band is considered an important part of athletic events, but when it seems not to be important to the district budget I do not feel an obligation to pass up other opportunities for the band members to enrich their educational experiences in order to have the pep band play.

Thank you

I didn't realize that the pep band was pretty much on their own. That certainly doesn't seem fair. The band plays a huge role in supporting our teams and getting the crowd involved and they should have just as much support from the district as everything else.

I agree that your time is valuable and the kids should take every opportunity that is given to them to further their education.

Thanks for the info!

The band is very important and we sure did miss you. Ms. Pletke you do a great job with the band and you deserve to be compensated for your time, effort and talent! It's too bad the district doesn't seem to think so; I hope that will be changed in the near future. Well I hope to see the band and everyone else Friday night in Eden Prairie. Go Giants!
