Here is my ranking of the local burger joints - non-chain. Feel free to reply with any I might have missed (save the McDonalds response for the burger chain rankings). I have a bias for the Brass Top so I have excluded them from the rankings.

Honorable Mention – Biscay Liquor Store & Belle Plaine Golf Course

#5 – Union Hill Bar (Union Hill) – Order the double cheeseburger. Smaller patty but very tasty.

#4 – E.J.’s (Gaylord) – Made fresh with beef from the local meat market. Order the bacon cheeseburger – the bacon is fresh from the meat market also. Nothing like meat market bacon.

#3 - Whiskey River (St. Peter) – Awesome burger. Deserving of a higher ranking but the price takes away from the taste.

#2 - Lamplighter (New Ulm or Hutchinson) – All burgers are handmade ½ pound burgers. Order the mushroom and swiss – the mushroom sauce is awesome.

#1 Hermie’s Bait Shop (St. Peter) – Hands down the best burger around. On a warm fall day, take the back way through Le Sueur and Ottawa to Hermie’s and enjoy the colors. For those needing a smoke, the patio provides ample opportunity. Make sure and order a Schell’s dark beer to go with your burger.

Does anyone know if there is still a bar/grill in Cambria that makes massively huge burgers? I used to love playing fastpitch in that town!

I know this is a "Henderson area" rankings but if you're ever in the Highland Park part of St. Paul make sure you stop at the Nook off of Randolph on Hamline...right across from the Cretin/Derham Baseball field. One of the best burgers around!

If you are looking for that not so ordinary hamburger swing into E. J’s on the east side of Gaylord. About a month ago they expanded their hamburger menu. There is the German – sauerkraut and 1,000 island. The Canadian – Ham and some Hollandale sauce. The Popeye – Green & Black Olives and Swiss cheese. The Philly – peppers, onions, mushrooms, and Swiss cheese. The G.F.D. Alarm – sautéed jalepenos and pepper jack cheese. And a few more that escape my memory.

The most intriguing one was the breakfast burger. Cheese, bacon and a fried egg on top of the burger. I didn’t have the gonads to try it. Maybe next time. All burgers are ½ pound and fresh from Lang’s meat market (formerly Pinske’s) in Gaylord.

Well worth the stop if you are in the Gaylord area. Maybe someone will have the guts to try the burger with the fried egg and report back?
