Hello smile

My family and I are moving to Henderson the first week of June. We are looking forward to making new friends and learning about what there is to do in Henderson. I've been looking at the city website and reading some of your posts here on Henderson Chatter laugh I have tons of questions about the town if anyone is interested in sharing?

~ Saw that the B&B listed on their website that Cross Country skiing is an activity available in Henderson. Are there trails, a place to rent skis or a charge for this?

~ I have been taking Tennis Lessons for a couple months now and would really love to continue learning to play. Anyone know of a place to take lessons and where the nearest courts are?

~ My boys LOVE to go swimming. Where is the best waterpark close by? I also love to swim laps, is there an indoor lap pool anywhere close?

~ Are there any kinds of bus transit services that pick up in Henderson? If so, where do they go?

~ Where are the best restaurants to eat at in Henderson and surrounding towns? Do any places have kids eat free specials? Where are the best burgers, steaks, fish and seafood found?

~ We have younger children and would love to be a part of a church that has other families with young kids so that we can make friends. We are pretty open to any Denomination (Assembly of God, Lutheran, non-denominational and so on...) Which church do you think would be a good fit for us?

~ Is there any places for mom's to go with their kids, that has Wi-Fi? I take my boys to the McDonalds play land by our house now, they play while I surf the web. It would be REALLY nice to still have someplace to go do that!?

~ What do people think of the New Country School?

~ Are there any indoor children’s parks for play areas in the area? My boys have a lot of energy and life is much nicer when I can bring them out and about! Would be nice to hear from other mom's for ideas smile

I am extremely interested in getting involved in the horse community. I don't know that I would be so intersted in showing horses as much as I would be just cassual riding in my spair time. I have my eye on a horse and may be purchasing him this fall. I would be looking to board him someplace very affordable as my husband is letting me get a horse, but only if I can pay the board with the money we were spending on my Lifetime membership (which I will no longer have). I don't know how much board goes for, so please let me know if anyone or if anyone knows of someone who is looking for a boarder at a reasonable price.

Are there any Comminity Ed activities? How would I get my hands on a Community Ed booklet?

Are there any softball leagues for adults (my husband enjoys playing)?

We have a fishing boat, any advice for my hubby on where to fish and who with, would be great. He also enjoys hunting but hasn't in a long while.

We both really love Karaoke, is there a weekly Karaoke night in town?

Is there a Redbox in town for getting movies?

What is the most affordable way to get cable, Phone and Internet in our home in Henderson?

Please feel free to inform us on anything you think we should know as newbies to Henderson!

Thank you so much for reading my post and for any advice or opinions you offer! We are really looking forward to our move there but also nervous about starting over in a new town.

Sincerely,
Lisa, Matt and family

Welcome to town. I will address some of your questions.

Skiing is available at the beautiful Nye Center just east of town, probably 3 miles. Can't speak to if rentals are available. Trails take you through the beautiful, natural scenery of the Nye Center. Great for spring, summer and fall.

You'd have to try LeSueur for tennis. Can't speak to lessons.

Gaylord (20 minutes west) is building a beautiful new water park. Should be open for business this summer.

Sibley County Transport offers some busing to the County's residents. Don't know where it goes or how it works.

Bittersweet and The Hogg Wild are both well beyond satisfactory if you're looking for some good eats. Bittersweet serves all your coffees and pasteries and has wonderful sandwiches and soups for lunch. The Hogg Wild has a full menu and will satisfy the heartiest of appetites.

My family worhips in a neighboring community so I'll leave that alone as to not exclude anybody. There are many options.

The Minnesota New Country School has a wonderful reputation.

Rush River State park is just a couple hog throws west of town and is a hot spot for horseback riding. Horseback enthusiasts come from all corners to camp and ride. You should have little trouble finding somewhere to board a horse. The Hardware Store in town would be a good place to ask these questions, they might be able to point you in the right direction, and provide you the household items you need as you get settled.

Community Education is offered through the LeSueur-Henderson School District. We received our catalog in the mail last week, and I'm sure one could be obtained by calling the friendly folks at LS-H Community Ed.

There are men's adult softball league's in LeSueur and St. Peter, and a very challenging tournament held each summer in Henderson during Sauerkraut Days, an event that you'll soon become familiar with and undoubtedly come to love. Henderson also has the longest running fast-pitch softball team in the state for a town its size. (correct me if I'm wrong)

Enthusiasts like the challenge and mystery of fishing one of the state's most precious resources, the Minnesota River, whose waters border the community on the east. There is a boat landing right in town. There are numerous good fishing lakes within a one-hour drive.

Karoake with Deb and Rick happens most Friday nights at the Hog Wild.

Movies can be rented at the Henderson mall, also known as Wagars Red Owl.

Upon securing residence in Henderson, you will officially become a "Hendersonite." Take no offense, as its a title to be carried with great pride.

Henderson might be small in stature, but it is large in community pride, involvement and passion.

Don't forget that we have Toody's Sweet Treats! Ruth has specials during the week for lunch, made to eat sandwiches and wonderful treats all year round! Not to mention the friendly welcome feeling upon entering the door. We also have doctors in town and a pharmacy too. Hilltop Elementary is another great selling point for the town!

Welcome to Henderson, Lisa! (I know you're not really here yet, but you're already a part of one of the great treasures of this beautiful town...the Henderson Chatter!)

Let me be the first (of hopefully many) who will invite you to join us at St. Paul's United Church of Christ (UCC) at 111 N. 6th Street (known to the locals as Church Hill). When you arrive in town we'll be on our summer schedule, worship is at 9am on Sundays. And depending on the ages of your kids, we'd love to have them for our week of Vacation Bible School, August 7-11. You can check us out on Facebook: St. Paul's UCC-Henderson.

My husband Joe and I moved to Henderson just over two years ago when we were expecting our first child. We were looking for a town with character, a great sense of community, opportunities within and nearby for recreation and entertainment, and interesting and diverse people to have great conversations over coffee or beers with. We have found it here in Henderson!!

I hope your time of transition and moving goes smoothly. I look forward to meeting you!

I thought I'd died and gone to Heaven when I discovered Henderson. Best little town ever, well, except for my hometown of Lehigh, Iowa. :-) Have lived here almost five years and enjoy every day and look forward to every day!! Just a wonderful community, great neighbors, awesome place to call HOME! Sometimes I look out to the west and relish the beautiful sunsets and then at night, I look down on the lights below (which make me think I'm living in Whoville) and wonder how I got so lucky to live here. My husband loves it, too, and says it's one of the two best things I ever convinced him to do in life. I think the other thing was telling him he should send flowers to his mother. :-)

If you have a car that gets great MPG - driving around the backroads is one of the great things to do. At which point, you can take in some great parks for big hikes - Rush River Park and High Island Park (High Island Creek runs through it.) Both parks allow horses too, but taking kids for hikes in those parks is great fun.

I can help with the tennis!
Swanson's Tennis Center is part of Gustavus Adulphus College, 20 minutes away. They give lessons and have indoor courts for year round enjoyment.
My group is always looking for subs and I know other groups I can hook you up with too.
In the summer I either play in Le Sueur at the high school courts or in St. Peter where there are many different sites.

I may have missed it but I don't think anyone addressed your questions about swimming laps.
The Le Sueur Community Center has nice facilities for indoor swimming along with a weight room and ellipticals, treadmills, stair-steppers, etc with an outdoor pool one block away.
Kids' swimming lessons are on the community education calendar. I took my toddler last summer and will again this summer.
They is also a winter-only indoor ice-rink there for skating or hockey.
The community center also has facilities reserved for regular activities which you can probably join if you ask around.
I believe Zoomba classes are still happening at the Brass Top Hall and they seem to be popular.
There's also regular Texas Hold 'Em on Thursday nights if I remember correctly.
Henderson also has the distinction of having an archery range in the basement of the city hall. You may not be interested in archery but it makes for something interesting to tell your old friends about your new town.

Welcome Lisa Marie and family,
I bet you weren't expecting so many replies. Henderson is a wonderful place be. Loads of opportunity for meeting people. If you like bird watching and nature you are in luck. We have an organization called Henderson Feathers. There is a mini-birding museum on Main St. We sponsor Nature Neighbors and Hummingbird Hurrah. On Tuesday nights starting the end of May there is a Classic Car Rollin that runs for the whole summer. Lots of chances to become part of the community.

Hello!

WOW, thank you so much for such a wonderful welcome! We are all excited about so many of the things you have told us about.

My boys and I can't wait to go to the new waterpark in Gaylord this summer. We are also looking forward to using the Community Center in Le Sueur and may get a membership since it's so close and there is so much to do there for our whole family. Very happy to hear such great words about the schools there too.

Karen, I would LOVE to find out more on joining a group for Tennis. I am a beginner, but love playing and want to continue learning.

I looked into my cable/internet/phone question and so far know that Mediacom offers a deal on all three for $90 a month the first year and may do that. However I notice there is a satellite on a lot of the houses out there and wondered if that is a better way to go, still going to check into that further. If anyone has any input, please share smile

Can't wait for Karaoke and poker nights! We can't wait to enjoy all the wildlife and trails out there with our boys too. Bird watching sounds like a blast!

We are already planning on signing our boys up to play baseball (T-ball) since it sounds like a pretty big deal in Henderson.

We'll be trying out quite a few of the churches in the area, so maybe we'll see some of you there. Otherwise we'll be in town and around at the parks after we get settled in. Can't wait to meet everyone, thanks again for such a wonderful welcome!!!!

Sincerely,
The Holmquist Family

Henderson has some great history too - It was one of 15 or so pioneer towns in the early state of Minnesota. The grand old buildings on main street are a sign of how prosperous it was in the early days, first a steamboat landing and then a railroad stop. There are many great houses in Henderson too, and well-preserved. It had the land office for a while, where homesteaders would come to register a claim, and was a major Military road from Fort Snelling to Ft. Ridgely.

Henderson's business of past include blacksmiths, stables, brickyards, sawmills, breweries, flour mills, and everything else you'd see in a "western" town in the 1860's.

Check out the history book for information on the neat places to see. Like the old Sibley County courthouse or the history museum, Brown's Cemetery, Allanson's Park, the Oxcart trails at the Ney Center, and lots more. This place is rich in Native American and Pioneer history. I also like the histories of the surrounding towns/townships like Jessenland, East Henderson, Blakely, the various river landings.
