Good afternoon. This will be your first of a few many more random confabulations about the greatest professional tackle football team never to win a Super Bowl, our Minnesota Vikings.

We all know what happened when the Vikes took to the field to play a regulation rule football game. Continuing the storied history of Viking playoff bumbles and stumbles, they snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory.

It's been somewhat of an uneventful offseason so far, compared to recent offseasons. "Clint Eastwood in cleats", Brett Favre, told Jay Leno he's going to just enjoy the next few months and not think about football. I would too if I were him, because the Bears signed Julius Peppers, the defensive end who embarrassed our left tackle, Bryant McKinnie. Embarrassed him so bad, that McKinnie was sent to the bench. Now Bryant has to try to keep Peppers out of the backfield at least two games a season. I've been told by my sources read that the Bears may play Peppers on the left side of the d-line. It would behoove the Bears' strategists to deploy him on the right end position when they lock horns with the Vikes, to take advantage of the McKinnie matchup.

The Vikes lost some valuable backup depth in recent days. Running back Chester Taylor was signed by the Bears. Taylor is a good player, sent in to spell Adrian Peterson when Peterson needed remedial instruction on how to hang onto the football, and filled the role of 3rd down back. As long as the Bears don't utilize him on screen plays vs Pittsburgh, Taylor will do well in Chicago.

Utility offensive lineman Artis Hicks was signed by the Washington Redskins. He could fill in at gaurd or either tackle positions. A injury decimated offensive line will derail a successful season, and the team currently has no one with Hicks' experience and versatility.

Finally, head coach Brad Childress has been called to testify in the Starcaps case of defensive tackles Pat and Kevin Williams vs the NFL.

Bailiff to Chilly: "do you swear to tell the truth and nothing but the truth?"

Chilly: "aaaaaaahhhhh.......I........uuuuuuuuummmm...aah....do"

I like your comments - but I am pretty sour you didn't put it under Vikings Talk. I'll get over it, in time.

Sorry Nort. I'll run a lap.

Nort (or anyone)...trivia time:

Name the single game sack leader for the Vikings...as in "most sacks in one game".

I'll hang up and listen.

That's easy - Archie Manning. Sacked 8 times in Chicago during the mid 80's.

It must be # 75 Keith Millard because he told the Bloomington police “Go ahead and shoot“ because "My arms are more powerful than your guns."

At this time of the year, with the additional hour of daylight and temps warming up, I shift my focus towards the Twins and baseball in general. I'm really looking forward to that trip on Skeddy's FunBus in May to see the Twins play in the new ballpark.

I still keep the Vikings offseason moves under my thumb though. Recently, the Vikings wined and dined free agent running back Ladanian Tomlinson....or Ladell Thompson as Camel would probably call him while making a serious face. The New York Jets also wanted him, and over the weekend Tomlinson chose the Jets.

There's a report by some reporter (hence his job title) that Brett Favre was heavily involved with the recruitment of the would be backup to Adrian Peterson. Sounds to me that #4 will be our starting QB for 2010.

Trivia question:

Name the only two Vikings to wear the jersey # 10.

You'd be correct!

Longtime journeyman backup QB King Hill wore the #10 in 1968, the year after Sir Francis was traded to the Giants.

There's been debate during the latest NFL Competition Committee meeting on how to change the overtime rules to give each team a chance at scoring and winning the game.

As we know, the current format basically decides the game on the flip of a coin. Whoever wins the coin toss, wins the game....at the tune of around 80 % of the time. Winner get's a crack at the ball first, runs a few plays into field goal position, and ends it with a kick through the uprights. Game over.

Respective team's dreams and aspirations of winning a Lombardi Trophy can ride solely on one players coin toss calling skills. However, I have never witnessed this skill practiced. I've killed a few afternoons at the Vikings training camp in Mankato and have watched the team practice game type scenarios. Two minute offense drill, the onside kick drill, and the redzone defense drill. Never seen the coin toss drill though.

There's an axiom in the football world that applies to the coin toss. "Tails never fails." During the last Viking game, guard Steve Hutchinson was tasked with the responsibility of guessing which side the coin will face the sky when it lands, and by doing so correctly, a shot at a Super Bowl victory. Steve called "heads". I threw a bag of Doritos at the TV.

Undocumented in the press, coach Brad Childress was livid. "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING????!!! TAILS NEVER FAILS!!!" Hutch responded with "sorry coach, I choked under pressure." I'm postive that if they would have practiced this drill at training camp, with loud speakers pointed at Hutch and fans waving Homer Hankies in his face while yelling "HOOGILY BOOGILY CHOKE CHOKE CHOKE", Hutch would have been better prepared mentally to call that coin toss.

My proposal for overtime rules is as followed:

Head ref choses a number from 1 to 10, writes it down and gives it to another ref. Each team sends out a number guesser. Whoever choses a number that is spot on or closer to the number the ref wrote down, gets the ball first.

This would change the face of the NFL, like when the forward pass was invented by Joe Montana. Teams would reserve a roster spot for the designated number guesser. The NFL combine would employ a number guessing drill right after the 3 cone drill to test players number guessing skills while under stress. And most importantly, regular Joe's like me would have a shot at earning beau coup bucks as a number guesser specialist, as there would be no physical skills needed, and a chance to get my butt slapped by Brett Favre.

General football trivia question not Viking related:

What current offensive player is the only NFL player in history to score a defensive touchdown?

Well now, that was confusingly worded.

Let's try this:

I am currently an offensive player in the NFL. I am the only player in the history of the NFL to score an offensive touchdown as an offensive starter AND a defensive touchdown as a defensive starter. Who am I?

Devin Hester or Deion Sanders is INCORRECT!

The answer is Cleveland Browns wideout Mike Furrey.

In 2005, he was a starter as a free safety with the St Louie Rams and notched a pick-six that year.

In 2006, he played for the Detroit Lions but switched to a slot receiver on offense. He had 6 receiving TD's that year, and 98 receptions for over 1,000 yards. You like apples? HOW DO YOU LIKE DEM APPLES! Now that's a football player.

I know everyone was on pins and needles waiting for this answer, so there ya go.

This is a big week in the world of pro football. Tomorrow night, around 7 pm, the league releases the full NFL schedules. Look for the Vikes to match up against the Saints week one in a rematch from last years epic playoff contest.

The annual NFL draft kicks off Thursday night at 7:30. With the Vikes picking 30th, you'll have plenty of time to get that evening stroll in before their pick comes up.

Poker Face Childress hasn't leaked out any clues as to how they'll pick at 30. He went down to the U of Florida to attend QB Tim Tebow's "pro day workout". Now, this can be construed as genuine interest in the player, or it can simply be the classic Chilly smokescreen. I'm leaning towards smokescreen.

With starting cornerback Ced Griffin's torn ACL suffered in the Saints game and another year of wear and tear on tag team partner Antoine Winfield, I'm smelling cornerback as the Vikings pick. As a former high school shutdown corner myself (I once held Minnesota Lake's Z receiver to zero receptions...they ran the ball a lot), I know the importance of having restaurant quality cover men.

Or, it's a double smokescreen and Chilly takes Tebow.

Not too sure about the Vikes draft results. I was hoping cornerback Kyle Wilson from Boise St was going to be ours, but the Jets picked him right before us. This Cook guy from Virginia probably won't see much playing time this year. 240 pound running back Toby Gerhart will be fun to watch. Hopefully he doesn't equal out to another former Stanford bruiser, "Touchdown" Tommy Vardell. I'm going give the benefit of the doubt to Speilman and Chilly on these picks, as they've done a pretty decent job in previous drafts.

I'm sure with Chilly's unique coaching style, he'll have them snapped in to the "system" in no tiem.

Here he applies the unique "rubber chicken" coaching formula for success in a practice session:

Not much going on with the Vikes right now.

I did however realize something while eating Pizza Rolls the other day. They would have made outstanding sandbag bunkers while playing with GI Joe's back in my GI Joe playing days. I don't think they were invented yet though.

Training camp kicks off this Friday. Only two draft picks are signed, but that's not a huge deal seeing how none of them are going to be relied upon to contribute immediately.

Tackle football is right around the corner. Start studying your fantasy football cheat sheets Camel, the Ground Chuck Muncie's are going to be bringing the Oaken Shutter back home this year.

Am wondering if bnag noticed that the Assassin had passed on. For some reason I recall Brian being very fond of Jack Tatum's defensive prowess.

Loved watching those Raiders teams. Tatum, Lester Hayes, Atkinson and Willie Brown made a hell of a back 4.

Another season of professional tackle football is right around the corner. Our beloved Minnesota Vikings start training camp this Friday with the first practice the following day.

Look for them to start off slowly to begin the season, as they will be implementing shiny new offensive and defensive schemes this year under a new coaching staff. The schedule does them no favors in the beginning of the year while they attempt to discover the intricacies of these new schemes.

Official prognostication from this chair has them finishing strong, and tallying up 8 wins and 8 losses. Maybe 7-9 depending on the refs as those guys still hate Randy Moss for the squirt bottle incident.

Confabulate....
