The middle school and high school have an interesting schedule this year. Students will have 8 classes but there are only 6 periods a day. Every day the student’s schedule will change until the fifth day at which point it will start all over again.

It looks like some classes will be the same period every day. For instance- Phy. Ed. might be every day during the 5th period and English might be every day during period 1. It also looks like some classes are in two day blocks, for instance Social Studies might be period 2 for two days and the next two days it will be period 4. In looking at Junior’s schedule it looks like a few classes will have different teachers during this two day block which is an interesting dynamic as it will probably require teachers covering material at the same pace.

From what I gather the days will be numbered 1 through 4 and the student’s schedule depends on what day it is. For instance, the first day of school is Tuesday and that will be Day 1 and two weeks later Day 1 will be Thursday. This would have been real confusing to me back in the day but I was never the brightest crayon in the box. I suppose it will build organizational skills – which is a good thing.

I was at school the other day asking how the students will know what day it is. I was told there are still discussions being held but they thought it might be announced during morning announcements. There was another dad there with me at the time and he said that should work because announcements are during home room. We were then told there will be no home room this year. (I never did think home room was efficient.) I asked about signage in common areas and I was told that had not been suggested.

I am hearing there are quite a few rumblings about this schedule – change is not easy. I am not quire sure what to think about the new schedule but for me it would be nice NOT to have the same old schedule every day. But then again, others like having the same schedule every day – to each their own. It will be interesting to get feedback from the students.

Hopefully the school will find a good way of communicating what day it is prior to the beginning of the first period otherwise they might run out of tardy slips.

Kids have settled into the schedule pretty well and with few problems. Better transition than many people thought it would be. It's amazing how flex. they are.
