Sarcoscyypha coccinea (Scarlet Cup Fungus) is a first indication for us that spring is right around the so-called corner, and of this writing, they may be found in the area of American Basswood trees throughout the woodands...they be found on the ground attached to small dead branches. Actually, they often pop up right from beneath the snow, and we've found them "started" in the very late damp autumns. However, if you try to "bring them into the home," they soon wither and their beauty is gone. Fairly common, but worth a trip into the spring woods.
