2012 July 16 St. Thomas News
Our next scheduled mass at St. Thomas is July 28th at 5 pm with Father Burns.
6 am masses are on Sundays at St. Joseph’s Church in Henderson during the summer season.
After a recent stay at the hospital, Father Richard Roedel passed away peacefully, Monday afternoon, July 16th at the Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 20 at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. Fr. Michael Kaluza will officiate. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Belle Plaine. We gratefully shared Father with our sister parishes, St. Scholastica in Heidelburg and St. Joseph’s in Lexington, for 12 years. After telling us he was getting tired, Father retired in 2009.
A gentle and soft-spoken man, Father was very approachable for children and students alike… to give him hugs or handshakes. For parishioners, he was a friend as well as our spiritual guidance counselor. His sense of humor was phenomenal, if he could use that humor in front of witnesses; he’d relish it even more. Father was a treasure to know and made his time as our priest memorable for us. Our sympathies to his sister, Joan, his nieces and nephews. Father Richard Roedel made his mark on this parish and is loved by many.
Holly Oak and Bradley Schmitz were united in marriage at here at St. Thomas on Saturday, July 14th in a lovely wedding ceremony officiated by Father George. The beautiful bride is the daughter of Andy and Barb, and the granddaughter of Jim and Joan Oak. The lucky groom is the son of James and Sharon Schmitz. Wedding party members from St. Thomas were Annie Connelly and Rita Halloran… and of course Holly’s brother, James, still looking as handsome as ever… even with his injured nose. The wedding colors were black, white and emerald green…so becoming in our community. Guests kept cool at the Park Ballroom following the ceremony.
St. Thomas girls in the sky lately… Brigid Doherty Tuck hopped a ride home after dropping her car off at La Belle’s in Le Sueur for service. Brother Mike showed up… with the plane! Only a Doherty…
The O'Connell girls took a dive…”Sky-dive” that is… Rita and daughters, Rachel and Emily, Saturday, the 14th. They love their adrenalin pumpin’ and were so excited, “Woo-hoo!!!” Most of us like a little adrenalin pumpin’… but not that hard. Checked the Kolden website… they made it.
A few Halloran girls… a bit more grounded, Margie Eischens, Sheilah and Mary Soukup along with Mary’s daughters, enjoyed the NEW PRAGUE AREA COMMUMITY BAND concert on July 1st in Northfield. The next concert is Thursday evening at 7 at the New Prague Memorial Park.
A few Halloran lads, Dr. Tim, Tar and Jimmy, dropped in on their uncle/brother, Ed Halloran last Tuesday for a nice visit. This Tuesday, Doc and Tar dropped in on Dorothy Halloran, in Le Sueur, who is always glad to see them.
Cari Landwer, her daughters, Katelyn and Madelyn, and their grandma, Loni, enjoyed the ice cream social at Good Counsel in Mankato on Sunday. Katie and Maddie’s great grandmother, “G-G Mary” Studer and their great-great aunt, Sister Madeline Studer (her family calls her “Aunt Madge”) gave them a mini-tour of part of the Good Counsel classrooms where Aunt Madge and G-G Mary had attended school. They enjoyed the music from the magnificent organ “only 12 in existence” and the brief history of the church. The girls enjoyed the ice cream, bounce house, and taking turns riding with Aunt Madge on her fire-engine red “corvette” (scooter). Good crowd … a fun day for all.
Greetings, Tom Doig…heard many nice comments about him at the wedding. ’Twas a pleasure to finally meet you.
Happy Birthday, Trish Larson, July 18th.
Happy Birthday, Jeanne Connolly, this Thursday, the 19th.
Happy Birthday, Mary Jean Halloran on the 22nd of July.
Commin’ up: Andy’s Memorial Ride is coming up this Saturday. Andy Fogarty is one generation from St. Thomas.
Where’s the rain? Keep cool and have a good week, folks.
