It means that the MSU-Minnesota hockey team's nickname is the Mavericks, or a cow. Like bull fighting, where the guy holds the red carpet and the bull comes running real fast and he pulls it away he might yell ... "olayyy" to the crowd's roar. Then when he starts stabbing the bull in the head as it runs by he might do like a pirate with a sword trying to initiate a sword fight, he'd pull the sword from its case, hold it before him and say "ollayyy", as in "would you like to have a sword fight." Only the bull, or the cow in this case, might just run at the red carpet and continue to get stabbed because he's just a cow and doesn't know any better.

Should be a real tussle this weekend between the No. 4 and No. 5 ranked DI hockey teams in the state, behind Duluth, Bemidji and St. Cloud State. My Uncle Skeddy and I will be ringside on Friday night with Dubay ... oops, guess he probably won't make it.

I would just like to congratulate the MSU Mavericks on their SWEEP of the #17 ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers this weekend in Mankato. Clearly the Lophers are either over rated or the Mavericks are just coming into their own. We shall see as the purple cows host the soon to be not named Fighting Sioux of North Dakota next weekend. MOOOOOOOOO!!!!

17th ranked, that is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Out of 38 DI hockey teams? I got a little bored with all this talk of the MSU goalie being so great last weekend. The Lophers were 0-for-whatever on the power play, I think they should've started declining penalties. Even Skeddy would've stopped 45 out of the 50 Gophers shots on Saturday night because the Lophers were either shooting it into the defender that had fallen to block the shot or right into the goalie's chest. Gotta a bit tired of them talking about how this guy was stonewalling the Gophers when few of the chances were actually quality. Pretty "messy" hockey by both clubs, not much tic-tak-toe tape-to-tape passing. Mavs have now won 5-of-6 in this historic rivalry, and the Gophers are the fifth-ranked DI hockey team in the state, outta five. Pretty sad.

Just would like to give credit where credit is due here. After a holiday break the purple cows from Mankato promptly went to Chicago and took home something called the Shillelagh Tournament championship this weekend. After edging #12 ranked Notre Dame 4-3 Saturday they cruised past Brown 7-3 yesterday in the tourney final. This pulls the Mavs back to .500 on the season overall at 8-8-4. After one more non-conference tune up this weekend in Kato against American Int'l, the purple hosts WCHA contender Denver in two weeks. MOOOOOOOO!!!

Brownton never had much for hockey. This is a non-event. The Mavs are a nice story, but until they get a bunch of banners hanging in All Text Arena they will still be just a nice story.

You wanna talk T-Wolves? I bet you didn't even see our plucky K-9s battle tooth and nail with the historic and prolific Boston Celtics last night on the Parkey of the Gahden, did ya? I have stopped watching the Wolves too much mostly cuz it's hard during the Holidays when I'm enjoying family and friends, plus I am sooooo fed up with the NBA and it's desire to keep the good teams good and the little teams down. Again last night, Wolves trail by one, seconds left, Rittenhour drives hard through a clear lane to the hole, he gets decked but the refs call TRAVELING! Don't know if you've seen the play, but when you do your face will be written with disbelief like Rittenhour's was. Conspiracy. Noone will watch ESPN if one of the Boston teams lose. It's stupid.

It has been wayyyyy too long for a little college hockey discussion here on the chatter. This weekend presents a stiff challenge for the 3-10-1 (2-7-1 in WCHA) MSU Mavericks as they head to the big city to take on the #4 ranked Golden Gophers 11-4-1 (8-2 in WCHA).
The purple cows, although behind in the head to head series by a wide margin, swept Minnesota last year in Mankato. Not to mention the current Gophers senior class is 2-5-1 against those hated grass grazers to the south. So recent history proves that MSU has definitely been a thorn, or should I say "horn", in Goldy's side when it comes to puck play.
You can catch the action Friday night on Mediacom channel 22 as the Wild trumped this game on FSN. Otherwise Saturday's game will be on FSN. DirecTV will have it on channel 675. Both contests commence at 7pm.
Let's Go Mavericks!!

What a beautiful morning. It's going to be a great day!

The only real intrigue in this weekends Purple Cows vs Golden Rodents matchup is whether the Gophers go over or under 14 1/2 goals for the weekend.

Gophers 8-2 and 4-1. Take the under.
