We've always been fascinated by photos of small birds or rodents impaled on barb-wire fences or sharp twigs by the wily Northern Shrike, but it was only recently that we came across a victim hanging within a yard of our trailer at the MN River. When you note a sudden departure of all feeding creatures near your bird area, and silence grips the otherwise busy territory, one knows that 1) a Sharp-shinned Hawk is lurking; or 2) the Northern Shrike is hungry for lunch. Rather than consume its prey in one sitting, the shrike will often place the intended meal in storage, as in the accompanying photo. Moments after the picture was taken, the junco was wafted skyward. "Zoom" the photo "up" to note the little bird legs dangling in space.
